Kennett Area Senior Center
Sets Tax Return
Prep Record!

More than 700 residents of Southern Chester County had their tax returns prepared at the Kennett Area Senior Center for the 2018 tax year, according to Jim MacLachlan, Local Coordinator of the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide Preparation Program in Chester County.  It was another record for the number of taxpayers served at the Center and was the most clients served at any of the AARP Tax-Aide program sites in Chester County.

“The pace just never let up,” MacLachlan said about the program at the Kennett Area Senior Center. Since February, volunteers with the AARP Foundation Tax-Aide program have been on site at the Senior Center twice weekly.  More than 1,400 total volunteer hours were contributed to the project.

“The contribution of this group of volunteers is extraordinary,” said Anita M. O’Connor, Executive Director of the Kennett Area Senior Center.  “Hundreds of older adults are able to access free and reliable tax preparation, ensuring that they are properly submitting their tax returns and effectively planning for the future.

The tax preparation program has been hosted at the Kennett Area Senior Center for over twelve years.  Each tax preparer volunteer has completed rigorous training in current tax law.  For many participants, the challenge of submitting their federal and state returns would be overwhelming.  The service is free of charge and designed to serve moderate to low-income older adults.

“We especially want to thank the KASC staff who helped make this year’s AARP Tax-Aide Program a huge success,” MacLachlan said.  “This partnership provides an excellent setting for us to privately work with clients, and we hope it demonstrates just how valuable the Kennett Area Senior Center is to the Southern Chester County.”

In previous years, the AARP Tax-Aide program has returned hundreds of thousands of dollars to local residents in the form of refunds.  “This program exemplifies our purpose of improving the financial stability of seniors in our community,” Ms. O’Connor said.  “We look forward to hosting each year, knowing that so many people in the region have come to rely on this service.
